At first it’s a restaurant similar to many others, candles light the room, their soft light flickering on the cream tablecloths and dancing off the glittering cutlery, then a painting catches your eye as you glance around. The fading reds and blacks of the volcanic rock create a twisting shoreline with small boats sitting motionless on the glassy surface of the Aegean. A closer look beckons, but curiosity turns to wonderment as the frame becomes a rectangular picture window and the paintings canvas morphs from fiction to fact – this is the view from inside the Santorini Icons hotel gourmet restaurant.

This is the problem with fantastic accommodation; one rarely wants to leave and experience what’s outside the door, a beautiful problem that guests at Icons hotel is Santorini know only too well. Its rooms are true cave dwellings, everything you would expect a Mediterranean grotto to be, with the addition of super-luxuries such as private swimming pools in your room. But for once, the bedrooms take second place to the bathrooms, as those at Santorini Icons hotel are something very special indeed.

The honeymoon Suitebathroom is set in a domed cave, where a central sink stands tall, behind it hiding a rainfall-style open shower and a steam room leading off to the left. In each bathroom you will find a box of delights waiting to soothe you into a relaxed state. These specially designed boxes using Rembrandt famous picture, the cupid blowing soap bubbles, but all mixed up, like an unfinished one of those children’s games where a picture is formed by sliding panels into place; contain complimentary Hermes bath products.

The painting used on these boxes and other Rembrandt masterpieces are repeated; at least parts of them, throughout Santorini Icons hotel, connecting each area with a common, but subtle theme. Colour schemes contrast nicely too, the exterior walls sharing a similar warm cream colour to that inside the rooms, making a nice change from the traditional, thus a little more common, white and blue. The rooms also take the cave theme to the next stage too, with actual rock protruding from the walls where other hotels in Santorini would have smoothed the area over. This is a nice touch which lends an otherworldly feel to some areas.

Icons hotel in Santorini is further set apart by its use of rattan sundeck furniture, rather than the normal wooden type, and its infinity pool ending in a waterfall. Although the Santorini Icons hotel is not small by Santorinian standards, there a only a few places where total privacy can be achieved, and some of the rooms have veranda’s which connect directly onto the next. If you choose one of the upper room types, the Honeymoon or Master suite for example, the veranda’s are slightly more sheltered.

It felt quite cozy, especially in the rooms, where the luxurious furnishings and warm cream colouring of the walls felt very welcoming. The village of Imerovigli is close-by, not too busy and not too quiet, making both it and Santorini Icons hotel a great location to stay and explore Santorini hotels.
