Named as one would expect, after the owner, Alexander's Boutique Hotel is located moments away from the centre of beautiful Oia, easily one of the most desirable spots on the island of Santorini, but far enough away from the bustle for guests to take advantage of the peace and solitude should one so desire. On an island where many fabulous hotels vie for your attention, Alexander's offers something a little different; charm, beauty and character.

How does it achieve this? Amazingly, it does it by keeping things simple. Space is at a premium along the steep cliffs of Oia and a hotel either has to compromise or go without, a choice where the former option is the most oft taken, so on occasion, we have to make do with tiny pools, pokey verandas or restaurant's which spring up from nowhere when the sun sets. At Alexander's they have used the winding staircases and platforms built into the rock for one thing, attractive, spacious and beautifully decorated villas. So if a pool or flashy restaurant is essential to your stay being a happy one, then we would suggest selecting another hotel, as Alexander's has neither. It should be noted however, they have an agreement with a neighboring hotel for guests to walk the 100 yards or so to use their pool if they want.

There are just six villas to choose from at Alexander's, however we prefer to think of them as homes, as this is the feeling you get when you enter. Wooden beds and furniture, antiques, eye-catching trinkets on the shelves and colourful soft furnishings all create such an atmosphere of calm, you'd swear you were staying in an old friend's island retreat rather than a hotel. Intimate verandas make the perfect spot for enjoying your breakfast in the morning, indulged not only by the food, but by the amazing caldera view too. Each room is named after a precious stone and the entire ambience is one ideally suited for honeymooners – but of course can be enjoyed by everyone with even the tiniest amount of romance within them.

Of the six villas available, it's difficult to pick a favorite, however if pressed, we would say the Diamond perhaps has the edge over the others, thanks to the truly wonderful view from its veranda and your own personal Jacuzzi. As mentioned above, there is no restaurant at Alexander's, however you're close enough to Oia for an evening walk to one of the many to be found alongside its streets, or, each villa at Alexander's has a small, but perfectly adequate kitchen should you wish to prepare something there. After all, where better to eat than your private veranda?
